South Africa is built on a history of optimism. Despite our past of discrimination we have always managed to stay positive in times of hardship. As a result I chose to be inspired by Sophiatown and the Drum era of the 1950s in Johannesburg. Despite the political climate at the time, Sophiatown still managed to become a cultural hub. The home to intellectuals, writers, musicians, and artists, Sophiatown was a melting pot of creative expression. To me it represents the spirit of an era; a zeitgeist embodied by colour, energy and creativity. A symbol of optimism in the face of adversity.
